Historic Sumter County Seat

Listings in Sumterville, FL

Welcome to Sumterville, a small unincorporated community in central Sumter County, Florida — a former county seat along Interstate 75, near Lake Panasoffkee.

Sumterville is a small unincorporated community in central Sumter County, Florida, near Lake Panasoffkee and the Interstate 75 corridor. It shares its name with the county, both honoring General Thomas Sumter, a South Carolina hero of the American Revolutionary War known as the "Carolina Gamecock." Sumterville has deep local history. It was among the earliest settled points in the county, with its first post office established in 1854, and it served as the Sumter County seat during the nineteenth century. That role ended when the county courthouse burned in 1909 and voters moved the seat to Bushnell, where the county's government remains today. A railroad spur once ran directly into Sumterville, connecting the community to the regional rail network, though that link was abandoned by the 1930s. Today Sumterville is best known as a crossroads. Interstate 75 runs along its western edge, and Exit 321 marks the Sumterville and Lake Panasoffkee interchange. The CSX rail line still passes through, and County Road 475 provides local access. The community's position roughly midway between Ocala to the north and Tampa to the south, and near Florida's Turnpike and The Villages, places it amid some of Central Florida's most dynamic growth. Sumterville itself remains lightly developed, a mix of homes, small businesses, and rural land rather than a formal town. Lake-Sumter State College operates a campus here, anchoring an educational presence, and Sumter District Schools serve local students. Residents value the area's affordability, central location, and access to both Lake Panasoffkee's outdoors and the services of Bushnell, Wildwood, and The Villages.

About Sumterville

Real Estate & Housing

Sumterville's housing is rural and modest, with older single-family homes, mobile homes, and scattered acreage rather than dense subdivisions. The community's unincorporated status and long history mean a mix of housing eras, and prices remain well below Florida's coastal and suburban averages. Buyers here often seek affordable land or a central base between Ocala and Tampa. Development pressure from The Villages and the I-75 corridor is gradually adding new construction nearby, but Sumterville itself retains a small, low-density feel.

Neighborhoods

Sumterville has no formal subdivisions; homes and businesses string along County Road 475 and the roads radiating from the I-75 interchange at Exit 321. The community blends into the surrounding rural landscape, with Lake Panasoffkee just to the west and Bushnell to the south. Nearby Wildwood serves as a commercial hub at the junction of I-75 and the Turnpike, while The Villages, the sprawling retirement community, lies to the east.

Lifestyle in Sumterville

Life in Sumterville is quiet and rural, oriented around the land and the lake rather than a town center. Fishing and boating on Lake Panasoffkee, hunting, and small-scale agriculture are common pursuits. Residents rely on Bushnell, Wildwood, and The Villages for shopping, dining, and medical services, all within a short drive. The area's affordability and central location attract a mix of longtime locals, commuters, and retirees seeking a slower pace near Central Florida's growing job centers.

Schools & Education

Sumterville is served by Sumter District Schools, the countywide public district headquartered in Bushnell. Local students attend elementary, middle, and high schools across the county, including South Sumter Middle and High Schools nearby. Lake-Sumter State College, which has a campus in Sumterville, provides higher education and workforce training, and the University of Central Florida and other institutions are within regional reach.

Getting Around

Interstate 75 runs along Sumterville's western edge, with Exit 321 serving the Sumterville and Lake Panasoffkee area. Florida's Turnpike and the Wildwood interchange lie just to the north, and U.S. Highways 301 and 441 plus State Road 44 provide additional routes. Ocala is roughly a half-hour north and the Tampa Bay area about an hour south. The CSX rail line passes through, a legacy of the community's railroad past, though passenger service no longer stops locally.

Parks & Recreation

Lake Panasoffkee, one of Central Florida's notable natural lakes, lies immediately west of Sumterville and offers fishing, boating, and wildlife viewing along its grassy shoreline. The Withlacoochee River and its state forest trails provide paddling, hiking, and hunting nearby. The community's rural roads suit cycling, and larger recreation destinations — including the springs and preserves of the Ocala area and the attractions of the Orlando and Tampa regions — are within an easy drive.
